Barbara (Bobbie) C. Lippiatt is an economist in the Applied Economics Office of the Engineering Laboratory (EL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Ms. Lippiatt began at NIST as an economics intern in the Applied Economics Office (AEO) in 1977 while an undergraduate student. She then worked summers in the AEO until earning her B.A. Degree in Economics at Hood College, and again as an Economics Co-op student while earning her M.S. Degree in Economics at American University. Ms. Lippiatt has since worked in AEO.Ms. Lippiatt primarily develops sustainability metrics and tools based on standard life-cycle approaches. She has developed the popular Building for Environmental and Economic Sustainability (BEES) tool, which measures the life-cycle environmental and economic performance of building products in support of cost-effective green design decisions. As part of the NIST Net Zero Energy High Performance Green Building Program, Ms. Lippiatt is currently expanding BEES to assess whole building sustainability performance. Ms. Lippiatt has been honored for her BEES work with an Energy Champion Award from the U.S. Department of Energy and a Silver Medal from the U.S. Department Commerce.
