J. D. Brookhart was born October 17, 1964 in Pueblo, Colorado and is the head coach for the Akron Zips football team and was previously a coach for the Denver Broncos and Pittsburgh Panthers. He played college football at Brigham Young University as a freshman walk-on before transferring to Colorado State University.
He became the 25th head coach of Akron on December 15, 2003, the third head coach since gaining Division I-A status in 1987. In just his second season, he led the team to their first MAC conference championship and bowl game in school history. They lost 38-31 in the Motor City Bowl to the University of Memphis.
