John Isner's Biography

John Isner was born April 26, 1985, Greensboro, North Carolina and is an American professional tennis player. He achieved his career-high rank of #19 on May 10, 2010, and is currently the number-two ranked American tennis player behind Andy Roddick. His first round match with Nicolas Mahut at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships was the longest tennis match ever in terms of time, number of games, and longest set; the fifth set alone is longer in terms of time than the previous record for a whole match of 6:33, and in terms of the total number of games at 112 in the 1968 Wimbledon Championships. Isner won 70 games to 68 in the final set.

In the singles as the 23 seed at the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, Isner, attempting to win his first match at Wimbledon, faced qualifier Nicolas Mahut in the first round. Isner won the match 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (3), 70-68.

In the match, Isner set the record for most aces in a match, breaking Ivo Karlović's record of 78; Mahut passed the old mark as well. Isner served an all time record of 112 aces, ahead of the 103 aces served by Mahut.

At 2113 BST on June 23 the match was suspended due to darkness for a second day at 59–59 in the fifth set. The match resumed on 24 June, at 14:30 (GMT), starting the third day of the match.

Isner has a booming serve, thanks in part to his 6-ft, 9-in height.  Commentators have also praised his composure; in five consecutive 3rd-set tiebreaker wins in Washington, he banged out huge serves when it mattered most. He is known to back up his serves with approaches to the net, though he does not strictly serve-and-volley. His forehand is one of today's best; he has hit winners against great defenders such as Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.
