A two-time American Olympic swimmer, Mark Spitz was born February 10, 1950, in Modesto, California. He holds the record for the most gold medals won in a single Olympic Games (seven), which he set at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany. He remains (as of 2008) one of only a few Olympic athletes to both win a gold medal in every (individual) event he entered in a given year, and to set a new world record in each such event.
Between 1965 and 1972, Spitz won 9 Olympic gold medals, 1 silver, and 1 bronze; 5 Pan American golds; 31 National U.S. Amateur Athletic Union titles; and 8 U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association Championships. During those years, he set 33 world records.
His participation in the Munich games, swimming with a mustache, gained him a bit of notoriety as most competitors opt to swim without facial hair, often shaving their bodies completely.
