The New England Patriots selected Sebastian Vollmer in the second round, 58th overall in 2009 NFL Draft. Vollmer had an extremely productive rookie season, playing in 14 games, starting in eight of them, with five at left tackle and three at right tackle. Belichick and the rest of the coaching staff were so impressed with Vollmer that he earned a starting position at right tackle in the playoff game against Baltimore. Vollmer is considered to be the future of the Patriots offensive line.
Vollmer was born in Germany and did not play American Football until the age of
14. While playing in Germany, he
was named to the European All-Star team and was a member of two national
championship teams. He was recruited
by several colleges as a tight end and ultimately decided to attend the
University of Houston. When
Vollmer arrived in Houston he barely spoke English, which now comes easily to
him. He did not make the switch to
the offensive line until his junior season. However, by his senior season he was named to the first-team
All-Conference USA as a left tackle.
After being selected by the Patriots, Vollmer signed a four-year contract
ensuring New England fans that he will protect their star quarterback for years
to come. While in Houston, he was
a double major, majoring in both communications and economics. Although Vollmer is a giant, at 6’8”
and 315 pounds, he is best described as a gentle giant. His friends and teammates all say that
he is a very kind and considerate person.
During his free time, Vollmer enjoys working out, watching movies and
traveling to the Caribbean. His
parents and older sister still reside in Düsseldorf, Germany.
