Lee Smith Speaking EngagementFormer MLB closer Lee Smith recalled his playing days at the Eau Claire Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Monday, January 28.

Smith was the featured speaker at the ceremony held at Florian Gardens and also took time to visit the Hank Aaron statue outside of Carson Park. The 1994 AL Rolaids Relief Man of the Year is currently contributing to baseball as a minor-league roving pitching instructor for the Giants and remarked, “Small towns is really where Major League Baseball came from. You think of the big cities and things of that nature, but towns like Eau Claire is like where I came from. When I played you’d see guys from places like Eau Claire who played Sandlot ball, but you just don’t see that anymore.”

Unfortunately, Smith himself has not been inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame. He finished his career in 1997 with 478 saves, the third most in Major League history, but received just 47.5 percent of the vote this year with 75 percent required for induction.

Providing his thoughts on the situation, the Louisiana native noted, “It’s been baffling the probably the last eight years. There’s a lot of guys in the Hall of Fame who I had more votes than originally like Andre (Dawson), Bert Blyleven, guys like that and Bruce Sutter. Now I don’t really understand the voting. I’m not upset at the guys because it’s a tough thing to do.”
