Allen Iverson Speaking FeeGoodbyes are never easy for sporting legends, and Allen Iverson was no exception to that when he said an emotional goodbye to the Sixers fans on October 30 prior to the teams game against defending NBA Champions Miami Heat. In his speech Iverson thanked coaches, trainers, and family members, and gave special shootouts to Michael Jordan, Larry Brown, and his teammate Aaron McKie who he said had the greatest influences on his basketball career.

“I’m formally announcing my retirement from basketball,” Iverson said. “You know, I thought when this day came it would be basically a tragic day. I never imagined the day coming, but I knew it would come. I feel proud and happy to say that I’m happy with my decision and I feel great.”

Iverson also spoke fondly of his alma mater Georgetown. “I always believed in myself, my mom always told me I could be anything that I wanted to be,” Iverson said. “I truly actually believed it. I fought. I went through a lot, trying to get to this point right here. Coach Thompson gave me an opportunity when nobody in the world would and believed in me. Basically, saved my life and helped my dream come true.”

Thought to be a first ballot Hall of Famer, Iverson was an 11-time All-Star who averaged 26.7 points, 6.2 assist, and 2.2 steals a game during his 13 year career. In 2001 he was named MVP after averaging 31 points and 5.5 assists per game. Remembered for his small size but big time play, Iverson brought a hip hop flare to the game that allowed fans to connect with him unlike any other player. He changed the game, and was rightfully celebrated in Philadelphia on Wednesday night.
