Baseball legend Andre Dawson has been named the guest speaker for the 2015 Mickey Mantle Classic awards banquet to be held on April 5, 2015. The Mickey Mantle Classic will be played from April 6-11 in Commerce, Oklahoma at the field promptly named after the baseball legend Mickey Mantle, also known as “The Commerce Comet.”
Dawson was named the featured guest speaker during an announcement made by tournament director Brian Waybright on Friday, October 17.
“He was a heck of a ballplayer,” said Waybright. “He’s the first real slugger that we’ve had. But then you look at it, he had over 300 stolen bases and a heck of an arm in the outfield. He really was an all-around player.”
Dawson played for the Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins over the course of his 21 year big league career. By the time he retired in 1996 he had accumulated 438 home runs and 314 stolen bases, making him one of only four players to MLB history to hit over 400 home runs and steal 300 bases. In 1987 he was voted the National League MVP and was also an eight-time All-Star.
In 2010 Dawson was honored for his contributions to the game with induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In the Hall of Fame his plaque depicts him in an Expos hat, an ode to the team that he began his career with. Dawson is considered one of the greatest all-around players to ever live.
