MLB legend Cal Ripken Jr. was selected as the keynote speaker for this year’s SpringSpirit Baseball Breakfast that happened on February 2nd. The funds raised at this event will be geared towards helping children develop their mind, body, and spirit, and the non-profit organization raised more than $750,000 towards this cause. The breakfast took place at the River Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas, and it had a great turn out of around 500 people who attended. Ripken Jr. was a huge draw as many sports fans, not just baseball fans, know who he is and some of what he has accomplished in the MLB. In addition to that, Ripken Jr. is passionate about helping youth as well, so between the two organizations there was a mutual goal happening.
The Maryland native played as a shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles for two decades and was even named the All-Star MVP and given the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award in 2001 to honor him during that last year of his career. His father was a coach and manager in the MLB, also for the Orioles, which is probably where he was introduced into the sport and learned to get good at it. The 1983 World Series champion was elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007 and it was well deserved as he is a 19-time All-Star player with a league record of 2,632 games played.
Ripken Jr. worked in conjunction with the SpringSpirit Baseball Organization to put on a fundraiser breakfast earlier this month, and there was no better person to be a speaker there as Ripken Jr. is one of the big names in MLB history.
