Mike Montgomery SpeakerUniversity of California head basketball coach Mike Montgomery has announced his retirement after six seasons at the helm for the Golden Bears. Before announcing his plans on Monday, he met with athletic director Sandy Barbour to discuss his future and map out a plan to move forward.

“It’s all good, it’s all positive,” he said at a news conference on March 31. “It’s all for the right reasons. I feel really good about my decision at this time. I just think it’s time.”

Montgomery, 67, got emotional a few times during his retirement announcement, especially when talking about the commitment from his family, including his son John, who was an assistant on his coaching staff. Montgomery finishes his collegiate coaching career with a 677-317 overall record, having also spent 18 years coaching at Stanford and eight more at Montana. In between his coaching stints at Stanford and Cal, Montgomery also had the chance to serve as the head coach for the Golden State Warriors from 2004 to 2006.

“I wanted to go out on my own terms,” he said. “I didn’t want to go out because my health wasn’t good, and my health is great. I wanted to go out making my own decision and not somebody else telling me I couldn’t coach anymore, and I think I did that.”

Prior to the news conference in which he announced his retirement to the world, Montgomery met with his team privately, breaking down in tears when telling them the news. HIs emotion in front of his team and the world shows hid dedication to his craft, and the dedication he had to each and every young man that he coached during his career.
