andrew-luck-beard-01132014Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will be the keynote speaker at the inaugural Indiana Sports Awards on April 28 at Lucas Oil Stadium. This event will honor the top 28 high school athletes in Indiana’s fall sports for the 2015-2016 school year. These athletes have been nominated for the top honor in their sport by the coaches’ associations and IndyStar sports staff. Winners will be selected by the IndyStar sports staff. Awards honoring the top athletes in 28 boys and girls sports will be presented during the banquet. The top coach, female and male athletes of the year and the high school with the best fan experience, among others, will also be awarded.

The Washington D.C. native spent his early childhood in London, England and Frankfurt, Germany, where he attended Frankfurt International School. He is the oldest of four children. When his family returned to Huston, Texas, Andrew attended Stratford High School , where he threw for 7,139 yards and 53 touchdowns in his high school career, and rushed for another 2,085 yards. Luck was also co-valedictorian of his graduating class in 2008. He was recruited by Stanford head coach Jim Harbaugh. In 2011, he won the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award as college football’s player of the year. He was named a 2011 First Team All America. He was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy in both 2010 and 2011. He was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the Pac-12 (Pac-10) Conference in both 2010and 2011. CBS Sports draft analyst Rob Rang called Luck the best prospect he has ever scouted, while the Kansas City Star puts him in line with LeBron James and Bryce Harper as “the most hyped amateurs in recent sports memory”. Although widely projected as the No. 1 selection in the 2011 NFL Draft, Luck decided to return to Stanford for his redshirt junior season. Finally, on April 26, 2012 Luck was selected first overall in the 2012 NFL Draft to the Indianapolis Colts.

Since signing a four-year contract with the Colts, Andrew Luck, haas proven himself as the first round draft pick. With great plays throughout his first season in week 9 win against the Miami Dolphins,Luck threw for 433 yards, a new record for most yards in a game by a rookie QB. Luck later sent his jersey from the Dolphins game to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In Week 13 against the Detroit Lions,  with :04 seconds left in the game Luck threw a screen pass to Donnie Avery who got free and ran in for the winning score, marking a big moment in Luck’s early career. The win gave Luck his eighth on the season – the most wins by a rookie quarterback drafted first overall in NFL history. On December 23, 2012, Luck broke the record for most passing yards by a rookie against the Kansas City Chiefs, throwing 205 to bring his season total to 4,183. In his 2013 season he led the Colts to a 34–28 win over the then-undefeated Seattle Seahawks. In week 14 of the season, the Colts won their first division championship under Luck and were the first team to clinch their division that season. Luck has continued to do great things for the Indianapolis Colts and has fought through injuries to remain one of the best players in the league.

Luck has a lot to offer these star athletes and will be sure to wow the crowd. The celebration of high school athletes starts at 6 p.m. April 28 and includes a sit-down dinner, the announcement of Mr. and Miss Basketball and the keynote speech by Andrew Luck. For more information, to vote on the best fan experience award or to buy tickets, go to indystar.com/indianasportsawards. Athletes being honored and one guest can attend for free. 126567145_crop_650x440_crop_northThe Dallas Cowboys running back Darren McFadden appeared at the Little Rock Touchdown Club, sponsored by Simmons Bank, for the first time as a guest speaker. He has attended the event four times as a player. The club honored a multitude of college and high school players this passed Thursday night. The evening culminated with an enlightening question-and-answer session with moderator David Bazzel, the club president, and McFadden. This was the 12th year, the club honored the top high school players and coaches from each classification in Arkansas and most valuable players from each state college.

The first time McFadden attended the Little Rock Touchdown Club was in 2004 as a senior at Pulaski Oak Grove High School in central Arkansas as the Class 4A Player of the Year. He then appeared from 2005-07 while garnering national attention as a running back at the University of Arkansas. His NFL career started when he was drafted by the Oakland Raiders with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. He hit career highs and career lows over the course of 6 seasons with the Oakland Raiders where he had multiple injuries. He signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys in 2015. He became the first former Razorback running back to register two 1,000-yard rushing seasons in an NFL career.

During his appearance McFadden covered everything from committing to Arkansas as a high school junior to the rejuvenation of his NFL career in Dallas last season after seven years languishing in Oakland. Last season was rewarding for McFadden since it was just his second full season without injury. He was at ease with honorees and fans as he greeted them and took photos before and after the banquet. David Bazzel, the club president said,  “Michael Irvin was here last year, and he did a good job of meeting everyone, but I love a guy who has reached Darren’s status, and it doesn’t matter who comes up to him, I like to watch [how players interact]. He is cordial and accommodating to every person, and there’s something to be said for that because not every player is like that. That is a great trait.”

Bobby Knight Speaking FeeThis past week, Bob Knight made an appearance and spoke at the Purdue Ag Alumni Fish Fry. The event sold out and was held at the fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Indiana. Along with Knight, his coaching contemporary and rival, Gene Keady, was also present. Purdue’s fish fry has been annual since World War II.

The native of Massillon, Ohio native, Bob Knight won his first National Title in college basketball playing for Hall of Fame coach Fred Taylor while at the Ohio State University. His first head coaching position was for the Army Black Knights after enlisting and became the head coach at the young age of 24. While coaching the Black Knights, Knight coached long time coach of the Duke Blue Devils, Mike Kryzewski. In 1971 Knight was named the head coach of Indiana University. During his time with the Hoosiers, Knight and the Hoosiers went on to a National Championship while also going undefeated in 1976 and still the last to do it. Knight won a second National Title in 1981 with the help of star guard Isiah Thomas and a third in 1987. In 2001, Knight took the head coaching position at Texas Tech and immediately had the team improving and making it into post season play. Over Knight’s coaching career his teams won multiple conference championships, three National Titles, a gold medal in the Olympics, and an NIT championship. Knight finished his career with the most victories ever by NCAA Division-I coach at 902 but has since been passed by his former player Mike Kryzewski and is one of three coaches to win a NIT Championship, NCAA Title, and a gold medal.

This past week the University of Purdue held their annual Ag Alumni Fish Fry and had guest speakers Bob Knight and Gene Keady. The event, as always, was a great opportunity to old friends to connect and was sold out soon after tickets went on sale.

Booking Seahawks PlayersOver 700,00 loud Seahawks fans cranked up the volume Wednesday, cheering, chanting and going berserk during a parade and ceremony to celebrate the first Super Bowl victory in the history of the Seattle Seahawks franchise.

The mood in Seattle was electrified as the parade featuring the NFL champions began near the Space Needle and made its way to CenturyLink Field, the home of the team.

At a ceremony inside the stadium, the team thanked its loyal followers – the 12th Man – capping a day of boisterous celebration that drew an estimated 700,000 revelers to Seattle.

Players were introduced by the order of their jersey numbers and ended with No. 3, quarterback Russell Wilson, who walked onto the field pumping the Lombardi Trophy in the air to thunderous applause. “Our plan is to win another one for you next year,” Wilson said later.

Coach Pete Carroll led the crowd in a “Seahawks! Seahawks!” chant and said the team will be back. “We’re just getting warmed up, if you know what I’m talking about,” he said.

Many fans had camped out overnight to reserve front-row seats along the route, braving freezing temperatures. Others perched on window sills and balconies, climbed trees and pillars, or sat on sturdier shoulders to get a better view of their favorite players such as Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson, Malcolm Smith, Marshawn Lynch and teammates.
