ronda-rouseyThis past Saturday Ronda Rousey was named one of the three cover athletes for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. This was the first time there has been multiple covers for the issue andone of which feature the MMA fighter and champion Ronda Rousey.

The Riverside, California native, Ronda Rousey was raised by AnnMarie De Mars and Ron Rousey. Her mother, AnnMarie De Mars, had a well decorated Judo career and was the first American to win a World Judo Championship. Rousey began her Judo career at the age of 11 and accidently broke her mother’s wrist at the age of 13. At 17, Rousey qualified for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece becoming the youngest Judo participant at the games. Rousey ended her Judo career at the age of 21 and started her MMA career at the age of 22. In 2010, Rousey made her MMA debut with a victory over Hayden Munoz with an arm bar in just 23 seconds. Rousey then made her professional MMA debut in 2011 at the King of the Cage: Turning Point event. She once again beat her opponent in a short 25 seconds and what has become a staple of her MMA career. When Rousey was competing in the Strike Force division, Rousey fought in the 145 lb division due to the difficulty she had finding opponents in her own weight class. Over Rousey’s five year fighting career, Rousey has won 11 of them in the first round and nine of them by arm bar. According to UFC, Rousey is ranked the number one female bantamweight fighter in the world and was voted the best female athlete ever by an ESPN pole.

This past Saturday, Ronda Rousey was named one of the three cover athletes for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. The issue is always much awaited and will once again fly off of shelves. This year the issue will feature much more body paint than in previous years, such as the cover with Rousey feature on it.

LeBron James AppearanceMiami Heat star LeBron James has made the cover of Sports Illustrated for the 18th time. His first was back in February 2002 as a high school junior referred to as “The Chosen One,” with his most recent due to being named the 2012 Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year.

Time Inc. Sports Group editor Paul Fichtenbaum said that “what made James stand out this year was that when Miami needed him most he came up the biggest.” Referring specifically to Game 4 of the second-round series at Indiana and Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals at Boston.

Fichtenbaum remarked, “LeBron kind of made it easy on us. In a year that had really high standards, he just stood taller than everybody else.”

The 27-year-old had a number of significant achievements this year including becoming an NBA champion for the first time, winning the NBA Finals MVP trophy as well as helping the U.S. win Olympic gold for the second time and picking up his third NBA MVP award.

Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo apparently has a passion for dressing well, with the GQ editor-in-chief Jim Nelson making the announcement on Thursday that the NBA Champion is joining GQ as fashion intern for New York Fashion Week.

Rondo will be working closely with GQ’s fashion department, attending fashion shows with GQ editors and will even be writing about his experience for GQ.com with blog posts on men’s fashion and the fashion industry.

The three-time All-Star is already hard at work, commenting, “I love the set-up so far and I’m having fun. I’m still a rookie at this. I’m humble. Anything GQ needs me to do—getting coffee—I’ll do. In my position, I haven’t done things like this in my entire life. It’s fun doing what I do, but it’s nice getting the flipside of that 9 to 5.”

In addition to getting GQ into the spotlight, perhaps Rondo’s passion for fashion will rub off on his Boston teammates. We could see a whole new sharply dressed, snazzier Celtics team next season.

Jim McMahon, quarterback of the Super Bowl XX Champion Chicago Bears, is featured on the cover of next week’s Sports Illustrated with girlfriend Laurie Navon. They are both part of the story in the article, “The Women Behind the Retired NFL Men Who Suffer From Brain Trauma.”

The 53-year-old started experiencing behavior changes a little over five years ago, according to Navon, and since that time tests have revealed that he suffers from early onset dementia. McMahon went public with his condition in November 2010, noting “my memory’s pretty much gone.” He suffered a number of concussions over the course of his NFL career.

The issue of concussions in the NFL has been a focus of many conversations in recent years, and although some may have thought quarterbacks were exempt, that’s far from the truth. McMahon was also featured in a special ESPN report focusing on concussions in football and spoke about his current struggles with developing dementia as well as the tragic death of Dave Duerson.

Athletes who have suffered from hard hits, such as McMahon, can often offer insight and deliver a powerful message on the importance of safety in all sports.

L.A. Angels‘ rookie outfielder Mike Trout seems destined for stardom. At just 21-years-old, Trout becomes the seventh Angels’ player to make Sports Illustrated’s cover, a list that includes Nolan Ryan, Reggie Jackson, Rod Carew and Albert Pujols.

Trout has been named the American League Rookie of the Month for three consecutive months now, and he’s said to have a lock on the AL Rookie of the Year as well as being a top candidate for AL MVP.

SI writer Tom Verducci writes, “There never has been a position player this good this young.” He is on the August 27th, 2012 cover holding a bat under the headline, “The Supernatural.”

As of Wednesday, Trout’s stats make him the league leader with a .344 batting average, 97 runs, 39 stolen bases, a .606 slugging percentage and 1.014 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.

Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that he’s said to be handling the attention and acclaim with a great deal of maturity; remaining humble, modest and, most important for the Angels, focused.

There is no doubt that many corporations will be seeking out this exceptional player for Product Endorsement Deals and even Television Commercials as his star continues to rise. It will be exciting to watch his career, and this is likely only the beginning with much more to come for the young outfielder.
