There is a very special bond between a father and a son when it comes to sports. Often times it’s the father that first introduces his son to the sport he will grow to fall in love with, and it’s the father that becomes the first line of support for his son as he embarks on the journey to the most elite levels of the sport that he pursues.
On Thursday, October 23 former Ohio State basketball player and current CBS Sports analyst Clark Kellogg was at Columbus City Preparatory School to take part in a new initiative called “Donuts with Dad”. The initiative is a simple breakfast with sons and fathers, but through it’s simple goal it fosters much more. It’s a time where fathers, grandfathers, uncles or mentors can sit down and talk with their sons over a meal without having to worry about anything else.
During the event Kellogg served as the featured speaker and says he let the students guide him on what to say.
“Our experiences may be different, but there is common ground that we can touch on,” he said. “I think some of them probably enjoy sports, basketball – so we’ll find some common ground, but my desire is to have them give me some ammunition that I can use to help them grow and hopefully inspire and encourage them.”
At the end of the day the program serves to show the young men that their father or the male role model in their life support them and will always be there for them. When a young man can grow into a man and look back and say, “my dad or role model was there for me every step of the way,” that is truly special.
Clark Kellogg played for the Indiana Pacers from 1982 to 1986 and currently serves as the Pacers’ Vice President of player relations. Not one to just specialize in one area of expertise, Kellogg also serves as the lead analyst for CBS Sports and travels the country providing an inspirational message of hope to audiences of all ages.
