Brad Stevens KeynoteBoston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens will be the featured guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Wellesley meeting on October 21 in Wellesley, Massachusetts. The Rotary Club of Wellesley is one of the town’s oldest service groups and conducts programs of benefit to the Town and internationally. With his visit to their weekly meeting Stevens will speak about his career and serving others with the goal of raising funds for the mission of the groups mission at home and abroad.

Stevens road to the Boston Celtics was improbable considering where he began. After playing basketball at Depauw and earning his degree in economics he pursued a career as a marketing associate at the Eli Lilly Company. However, his passion for the game of basketball was still there and he decided to pursue a career in collegiate athletics, joining the Butler University basketball office as a volunteer in 2000. In 2001 he moved up to being the coordinator of basketball operations and then jumped to being a full-time assistant coach in 2002.

In 2007, after five years as an assistant, Stevens was named Butler’s head coach at the age of 31, making him the youngest Division I head coach in the country. His age aside, Stevens quickly established himself as one of the best coaches in the country, leading the Bulldogs to 30-4 overall record and a Horizon League Championship in his first season. This would be the first of four consecutive Horizon League Championships.

What made Stevens story special however was the fact that he led Butler to national prominence virtually out of nowhere. After making it to the second round of the 2007-08 NCAA Tournament and making another postseason appearance in 2008-09 as a Cinderalla team the Bulldogs made it to the NCAA Championship the next two-years. Stevens had taken a team no one expected to make the tournament and made them a favorite to reach the final four every year. Not only had the nation taken notice of him, NBA scouts took notice too, including the Celtics.

In 2013, after six seasons at Butler, Stevens signed a contract to coach the Celtics. It was bittersweet for the Bulldog faithful to watch Stevens go, but they were happy for his new opportunity at the next level and were appreciative of all he had done for Butler. From volunteer in the basketball office, to assistant, to head coach, to the NBA in 13 years. Talk about a Cinderella story.

The Celtics begin their second season under the direction of Stevens on October 29 against the Brooklyn Nets.
