Charlie Ward was a keynote speaker this past December for the Orange Bowl Breakfast. The breakfast was the 45th edition of the event that the Fellowship of Christian Athletes uses to honor student-athletes, coaches, and communities that are making a difference in young people’s lives. Both teams participating in the Orange Bowl, Oklahoma and Clemson, were in attendance as well. Along with Charlie Ward, Miami Dolphins General Manager, Dennis Hickey also made remarks.
The Thomasville, Georgia native made his name while at Florida State University when he not only won the Heisman Trophy playing quarterback but also played four years of basketball in which he still holds a number of records for. After graduating from Florida State, Ward stated he would not play in the NFL if he was not a first round pick. Since he was undecided between the NFL and NBA, Ward slipped in the NFL draft and subsequently chose to play in the NBA. That decision made Ward and still today the only Heisman winner to never play a down in the NFL and the only Heisman winner to play in the NBA. After being drafted by the New York Knicks in the first round of the 1994 NBA Draft, Ward was touted the point guard of the Future and by 1999, Ward and the Knicks reached the Finals to play the San Antonio Spurs. Injuries eventually lead Ward to retire from the NBA in 2004 but after his playing career Ward began coaching at the high school level stating “He wanted to prepare young minds for Christ.”
Charlie Ward was a keynote speaker this past December at the Orange Bowl Breakfast and the event had a great turnout. Not only did the teams participating in the Orange Bowl attend but so did other area coaches, student-athletes, and other community leaders.
