Alex Smith SpeakingKansa City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith delivered a heartfelt commencement speech at his alma mater, the University of Utah, on Thursday, May 1, 2014. During the speech he reflected on the many memories he ha while playing at the University of Utah and also came bearing lessons he’d learned since leaving the school. Among them was the importance of education, something Smith said he hoped to convey to the fresh graduates.

“I’m very fortunate to be playing football for a living. I never expected it,” said Smith, who earned his bachelors degree in economics, despite leaving Utah after his junior year. “But this is going to end for me one day, as well. It’s going to end for all of us at some point, and I think education is the foundation of anything you want to do in life beyond that.”

Overall, Smith said it was fun to reflect on the memories he had both on and off the football field while attending Utah. He also enjoyed the opportunity to be back on campus and see that many changes that have come with the success of the program, including the team’s new practice facility.

Smith is currently heading into his second season with the Kansas City Chiefs afters spending his first eight years in the NFL with the San Francisco 49ers. While playing at the University of Utah Smith led the Utes’ to a perfect 2003-2004 season and a Fiesta Bowl win. In 2013 he earned his first ever Pro-Bowl selection and is excited about what is to come for the Chiefs franchise in 2014.
