Former NBA player Chris Herren struggled with addiction throughout his professional basketball career. However, he has since overcome the demons that plagued him and in recent years he has devoted his time to break the stigma of addiction, bring awareness to the dangers of substance abuse and shed light on effective treatment practices through The Herren Project’s initiative, Project Purple.
For his contributions through Project Purple and efforts to educate youth about addiction through speaking engagements around the country, Herren will be honored with the Prevention Youth Award at the Insight House’s 11th annual Recovery Recognition Dinner on Wednesday, October 8 at the Radisson Hotel-Utica Center in Utica, New York. In addition to receiving the award he will also serve as the event’s keynote speaker.
While in New York he will also be making appearances at local high schools in the area. Prior to the event on Wednesday he will be speaking to students at New Hartford High School at 1:00 p.m., and will follow that appearance up with a speaking engagement at Thomas R. Proctor High School at 12:45 p.m. on Thursday.
Herren is an influential motivational speaker with the ability to adapt the lessons he’s learned in his own life to those who may be struggling with the same issues. Along those same lines, he’s able to discuss his own struggles in a way that engages those who have yet to encounter these issues and steer them in the right direction so that they can live a life free of addiction. Herren is a truly special man, with a strong, life changing testimony.
