The coach of the popular Pac-12 football team Mark Helfrich has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 2015 spring graduation ceremony at Southern Oregon University on June 13. It will be an excellent event for everyone who gets to hear this amazing coach’s speech, as his team is known for making some big plays on the field in the NCAA world. Not only that, but it sets up the event to create a good connection with the audience as he is a current resident of the state and works in a university environment. It will be a great way to send off the newest graduation class of SOU into their new environments.
There is another reason that Helfrich will be welcomed on to SOU’s campus with open arms: he is also an alumnus of the school and is a native of Coos Bay, Oregon. From 1992 to 1995 he was the Southern Oregon’s quarterback, and then became a coach in 1996. Initially he was going to school to learn how to be a orthopedic surgeon, but when he got hired to coach Boise State for a couple of years that career path took a backseat. He then went on to work for Arizona State and Colorado before returning home to Oregon where he is now the head coach of the Ducks.
Helfrich will be speaking to the newest class of SOU this coming June, and it is sure to turn inspire those students who attend as well as their families. Seeing someone who is a local and was once in their very seats that has made it to the big bucks will encourage them to believe that they can do the same.
