David Beckham SpeakerFormer LA Galaxy midfielder and world soccer superstar David Beckham has exercised an option to purchase an MLS team in Miami. Beckham made the announcement at a press conference on February 5, 2014 in Miami, and was joined by MLS Commissioner Don Garber and Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who have both been in talks for months with Beckham and his financial partners, British entertainment mogul Simon Fuller and Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure.

“I’m going to work hard for this city and this team,” said Beckham. “Everything I do is personal, and I want to make this my team.” The team, which will likely begin play in 2016, will join the 19 current U.S. and canadian teams already in the MLS and two new teams out of Orlando and New York that will join the league in 2015. Currently Beckham and local officials are choosing a location for a soccer-specific stadium, which will be funded by the new owners and additional investors to be named at a later date.

“We will fund the stadium,” said Beckham to the roars of local soccer fans who packed the outdoor press conference at Perez Art Museum. “And we’d like it to be downtown. Soccer fans love to walk to games, that’s part of the tradition.” In regards to the team itself, Beckham wants to build a dynasty. “But seriously, I wanted to create a team from scratch,” he said. “I want everything to be top notch. From the players to the coaches to the background staff.”

Beckham has been one of the most popular athletes on the face of the earth since his early days on the pitch with Manchester United at age 17. A two-time runner up for the FIFA World Player of the Year and former captain of the England National Team, he is considered to be one of the top 125 greatest living footballers in the world. In 2007 he made his highly publicized debut in the MLS with the LA Galaxy, and has been a fixture in the league ever since despite leaving the league as a player in 2011.
