Detroit Lions’ receiver Calvin Johnson needed just 182 yards going into the game against the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday night to break Hall of Famer Jerry Rice’s single-season receiving yards record.
After connecting with quarterback Matthew Stafford on a 26-yard reception he made history by surpassing Rice’s mark of 1,848 yards set in 1995. Surpassing the legendary Rice is quite the achievement and Johnson told ESPN, “It’s a huge accomplishment to take one of those records from the great Jerry. All the work that we put in this year, I guess you can say it’s well deserved.”
The Georgia native’s dad was there to witness the event and right after the catch Johnson went to the sideline to hand the ball to his father who said he couldn’t put the achievement into words.
Calvin Johnson, Sr. said, “You imagine great things, but how can you imagine this?”
