Cincinnati Bengals Devon Still accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the 2015 ESPY Awards on July 15, which was given to him to honor his five year old daughter Leah who has been fighting a threatening form of cancer over the last year. Some good news about the situation is that Leah now seems to be in remission but her parents were advised by medical professionals that is still isn’t a good idea to travel with her yet. Still accepted the award on behalf of his daughter and gave a heartfelt speech about how much support he got from his teammates and fiancé during this especially difficult time. However, the five year old did send a video message thanking everyone for helping her “beat up cancer” since she couldn’t be there herself.
The New Jersey native got his start in football at Penn State where he was a Defensive tackle under Coach Joe Paterno between the years of 2008 through 2011. The Consensus All-American in 2011 also won the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award and the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year award the same year, which set him up nicely for when he entered the 2012 NFL Draft. He was the 53rd all around pick and selected by the Cincinnati Bengals where he still plays today, but he also has his degree from the university in crime, law and justice.
Still had a very meaningful speech at the ESPY’s this year and it was a great way for him and his family to celebrate the remission of his young daughter’s very serious episode with cancer. Even though Leah couldn’t be there herself, she sent along a video to thank everyone for her support and thoughts during that difficult process.
