NFL player Devon Still was the keynote speakers at this year’s Indian Creek Foundation Celebrity Event that was held at Dock Mennonite Academy on March 31. Over $30,000 was raised at the event and all of the proceeds directly benefit the Indian Creek Foundation, which strives to find a cure for cancer. Still shared his own story with his young daughter’s battle against the illness, and she was fortunate enough to have beaten it and now lives a full life. However, the football player explained how difficult that fight was and everything that he and his family had to go through in order to see their child get well again. It was a very motivating and emotional experience for the audience, but at the end of the day, it was great that the athlete could be there to give that talk.
The Camden, New Jersey native was a star football player on his high school team which gave him a great opportunity to play for his college, Penn State, under the late coach Joe Paterno. In 2011 alone he was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, and a part of the First Team All-Big Ten roster. In 2012 Still entered the NFL Draft and was selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round, but only played two seasons before being cut from the starting team. His daughter had been diagnosed with cancer and he was recovering from a leg injury, so the Bengals kept him on their practice squad so that he could benefit from the insurance policy. As of 2015, Still is currently a free agent.
Still recently attended this year’s Indian Creek Foundation Celebrity Event where he shared his personal story about his daughter’s fight against cancer. The event was a huge success, as they foundation was able to raise over $30,000 towards finding a cure for the disease.
