The First deaf NBA player Lance Allred recently traveled to Pittston, Wyoming to speak to a group of students at Pittston Area High School about perseverance and never giving up sight of one’s dreams. In fact, other schools from the area gathered at Pittston Area’s gymnasium to hear Allred and take part in many of the fantastic lessons that he taught. He shared stories about his youth in Montana and growing up in a nice, small community as well as memories of playing in various professional basketball leagues both here in the United States and abroad in countries like Turkey. The main message he had for the kids was to work very hard for the things that they want, and then they will eventually have a shot to make those dreams happen in the future. In addition to that, the two-time NBA D-League All-Star spoke about communication and how essential that quality is when it comes to accomplishing everything on their goal list. The audience listened intently to Allred and it was a very informative and motivational presentation.
The Salt Lake City native was born legally deaf and despite people expecting him to turn into a social introvert, Allred did just the opposite. He spent two years playing for the University of Utah but didn’t get to see much playing time with the basketball team, so he transferred to Weber State where his talents were put to good use. The 6’11 player began his professional career in a French League and bounced around to many different teams and also played in other overseas leagues in countries like Spain, Mexico, Italy and Puerto Rico. In addition to sports, Allred is also an author and had his biography published in 2009, titled “Longshot: The Adventures of a Deaf Fundamentalist Mormon Kid and His Journey to the NBA”. He is currently working on two more fiction novels that have not yet hit the shelves.
Allred recently spoke to a group of students in Pittston, Wyoming about learning to overcome their obstacles and put forth the effort into making their aspirations real life things.
