Mark McGwire AppearanceFormer first baseman Mark McGwire, who became renowned in the MLB as one half of the famed “Bash Brothers” in the 1980s wth the Oakland A’s and went on to break the single season home run record in 1998 with the St. Louis Cardinals by hitting 70, was officially named the Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach.

McGwire is a southern California native who graduated from La Verne Damien High and played at USC and has an off-season home in Orange County. He’s spent the last three seasons coaching Cardinals’ batters with the team leading the National League in hitting and on-base percentage as well as being second in runs in 2012.

Dodgers’ General Manager Ned Colletti said of the 12-time All-Star in a statement, “Mark has been able to translate his success as a big league hitter into his work as hitting coach with the Cardinals. He earned the respect of both veterans and young players while in St. Louis and the offensive numbers the Cardinals produced under his tutelage speak for themselves. We’re excited to have him join our coaching staff and anticipate great things from his work with our hitters in 2013 and beyond.”
