Former Kansas City Chiefs offensive guard Will Shields delivered the keynote address at the eight annual Small Business Summit at Missouri Western State University’s Fulkerson Center on Tuesday, November 11. Shields, who played 14 seasons in Kansas City and owns and operates 68 Inside Sports, a gymnasium and sports facility, Overland Park, Kansas knows what it takes to open and operate a small business and provided those in attendance with words of advice for doing so successfully.
“I learned early in life you have to get up early,” he said. “You have to do things in life other people won’t. I learned how to deal with people. That’s just a part of business.”
During his career in the NFL Shields was a 12-time Pro Bowl player and seven-time All-Pro selection. In addition to his success on the field he was also named the Walter Payton Man of the Year and earned the Ed Block Courage Award for his dedication to helping those less fortunate than him off the field. His Will to Succeed Foundation has assisted battered and abused children in the Kansas City area for more than 20 years.
In 2011 Shields collegiate career at the University of Nebraska was honored when he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In addition to this incredible honor he was also a first ballot finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2012 and was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame that same year.
