Former Indianapolis Colts linebacker Pat Angerer announced his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday, October 14 via twitter. His announcement comes after being released from the Colts last season and suffering the same fate with the Atlanta Falcons this year during final roster cuts. That does not tell the whole story of his career however. In 2010 he was a highly touted second round pick by the Colts out of Iowa, and ended up earning a starting spot on the Indianapolis defense in 2011.
However, due to a series of injuries that caused him to miss time in 2012 and 2013 he simply was not able to get healthy again. Ultimately, being healthy is his goal and he sees his health as the main priority going forward. In the end, Angerer was thankful for his football career and all that it provided him and his family.
Angerer’s retirement message via Twitter read as follows:
“All I ever wanted to do was play for Bettendorf and that gave me the chance to be a Hawk. Then, all I ever wanted to do was step on the field at Kinnick and that changed my life. I want to walk away while I’m still able to give my wife and kids the man they deserve. I have given this sport all I got. It wouldn’t be fair to the game, the team, my family and my name to continue along this path any longer. It’s time to get healthy.”
“I’ve learned so much from so many great men along the way. I’m proud I was able to get a degree from a prestigious college and make a living playing a kids game. I had a lot of fun and I’ve been extremely fortunate. I’m excited about whatever the future entails. Thank you all for having my back.”
During Angerer’s career he recorded 327 tackles and forced four fumbles. He leaves the game with his head held high, having worked for and achieved his dream of playing the game of football at it’s highest level.
