Danny Wuerffel Speaking EngagementFormer Gators’ quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel was the keynote speaker during Thursday’s luncheon for the Beef O’ Brady’s Bowl at Tropicana Field.

It’s hard to believe it’s been 16 years since the 38-year-old won the Heisman and led Florida to its first national championship, and Wuerffel has continued to deliver powerful messages about giving back among doing frequent charitable work.

The message last week to Ball State and Central Florida players was simply, “It’s not about you.” He noted, “It’s about your time and how you can invest in others.”

A year and a half ago Wuerffel was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disorder that can cause paralysis, but his faith has helped him battle through. He said he’s been tested many times, including recently with the Sandy Hook tragedy, remarking, “There is a lot of brokenness and pain and evil. This is something that transcends our ability to have a simple answer. Things happen in this world. … Storms come. We have this hope and expectation, especially in America, that it will go well, that we deserve to be safe and happy. When a struggle comes, it’s not just the pain, it’s the broken expectation. God doesn’t take the storm from his children. He doesn’t save you from the storm. He saves you in the storm.”
