Jason Hanson KeynoteFormer Detroit Lions place-kicker Jason Hanson enjoyed a long and successful 21 year career in the NFL, but it had it’s ups and downs. Although he was fortunate enough to play in six playoff games during that time, over the span of two decades the Lions had more bad days than good. Hanson however, was always a constant both in his presence and his positive attitude. He continued to lead by example and show up each day ready to get better, an attitude that he attributes to his faith in god.

On Friday, October 17 he was the guest speaker at the Ignite 2014 Youth Outreach Rally in New Bern, North Carolina and he talked about exactly that.

“We had some really miserable years. When you are losing, even as the kicker, it’s hard to show up,” Hanson told the crowd. “The season is half over and you are missing the playoffs. Faith was a part of that. It was hard, but I felt God was at work. Part of it was knowing you were somewhere God wanted you to be. That doesn’t mean you are going to have awesome success.”

The Ignite 2014 Youth Outreach Rally’s goal is to provide teenagers an opportunity to come and hear the Gospel. Throughout Hanson’s speech he engaged the crowd as he told his story in a way that they could relate to. After his speech he hung out with the kids around a bonfire and ate some delicious food. The event was an overwhelming success.

Hanson retired in 2013 as the NFL’s third all-time leading scorer and a two-time Pro Bowler. Over the course of his career he was one of the most consistent performers in the league and will always hold a special place in the heart of all those that cheer on the Lions.
