Ned Garver SpeakerNorthwest Ohio’s first ever Major League Baseball player, Ned Garver, was the keynote speaker at the Garrold Parrott Field Benefit for Patrick Henry’s home baseball field on Sunday, March 30 at the Deshler American Legion Hall in Deshler, Ohio. During the event Garver recalled his memories of growing up in Ohio and what it took to become a tenured major leaguer.

Garver’s pitching career began at Ney High School in Ney, Ohio, where he helped lead Ney to a state championship appearance by pitching every game of the state tournament. After high school he got his big break by pitching for the Fort Wayne City Light in a national tournament. Through pitching lights out in the tournament he earned the respect of several major league scouts, and ultimately agreed to sign with the St. Louis Browns.

After working his way up through the minors Garver made his major league debut with the Browns in 1948 and went on to pitch 14 years in the bigs. In 1951 he had a career year, winning 20 games with the Browns and earning his first and only All-Star selection.

“Being selected for the All-Star game was one thing, but getting to start, boy that was icing on the cake,” said Garver during his keynote address.

In 1952 Garver joined the Detroit Tigers and went on the finish his career with the Kansas City Athletics and Los Angeles Angels. As a testament to his pitching ability and character, “the greatest hitter to ever live”, Ted Williams, once said of Garver, “He could throw anything up there and get me out.”
