Former Major League Baseball player and sportscaster Jim Kaat served as the keynote speaker for the Vermont Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament and Banquet on September 3, 2014.
The tournament was not held simply to crown a champion on the golf course, but to honor the service of 33 Vermont Wounded Warriors and veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. After his remarks Kaat stuck around to present the committee’s and MCC’s annual service to veterans award along with the President of the Manchester Country Club, Paul Cahn.
In addition to honoring the veterans in attendance, the event raised $57,000 which was distributed on September 16 to local organizations that provide assistance to veterans and their families.
Jim Kaat played 26 years in the big leagues for five different franchises and compiled 283 wins and a career 3.45 earned run average. After helping the Cardinals to a World Series Championship in 1982 he traded in his cleats for a microphone. In 1983 he began an illustrious 27 year broadcasting career with the Yankees, Twins, Good Morning America and ESPN. During his time as a sportscaster he won a Sports Emmy Award for Outstanding Sports Personality – Sports Event Analyst and became a legend beyond the playing field he dominated for over four decades.
