Former major leaguer Kevin Millar gave a speech at the Kahlmus Center at Mississippi State University Meridian campus last Tuesday for the Eagle Club Recognition Breakfast.
The California native holds a tied record with Red Sox player Kevin Youkilis for the most consecutive games reaching base with 71 straight. In 2003 Miller left his team in Florida to play for the Boston Red Sox and helped the team compete and win the 2004 World Series Championship, before signing on with the Baltimore Orioles as a free agent in 2006.
The first baseman and outfielder retired for good in 2010, and he currently lives in Austin, Texas where he is a baseball analyst for the MLB Network and New England Sports Network. In addition to that, he appears as a co-host for the show International Talk with Chris Rose on the MLB Network.
The speech he gave on Tuesday was mostly about how to deal with both success and failure, and how passion and drive are worth a lot more than talent for a specific career or sport. Determination is what got Miller his place in the baseball world, as he told the audience about how prior to joining his first professional team, the Florida Marlins, he only had $11 in his pocket. The breakfast event was a huge success and people got to hear some great insight about what it’s like to be a star player in the MLB.
