Former NBA player Chris Herren spoke at the Memminger Auditorium on November 12th to educate his next group of kids about how harmful drugs and alcohol are to a person if they want to succeed in life. The talk started at 7:15 p.m. and the room was quickly filled with eager listeners waiting to hear Herren’s story, which is a very powerful one at that. Even though he has been officially out of the NBA since 2006, Herren still uses his experience to travel around the country and talk to people who might one day end up in his shoes. These days he spends several months out of the year spreading his message in an effort to help young adults avoid some of the harsher moments of life that can be caused directly by substance abuse.
The Massachusetts native grew up in the town of Fall River where he began playing basketball in high school. Herren immediately showed a lot of promise and talent and ended up attending Boston College for a few years before transferring to Fresno. While in college, Herren battled quite a bitch with his temper and addiction to pills which is what eventually drove him away from his potentially great career. After bouncing around the world a lot and seeing that all is out there, the former player returned home and decided to get his life together. It wasn’t until a nearly fatal vehicle accident that Herren decided to change his life around and try to help others do the same.
Herren visited with another group of kids in the Memminger Auditorium earlier this month to talk to students and try to give them advice that they will carry for months and years to come.
