Mark Eaton SpeakerFormer NBA star Mark Eaton most recently took his talents to the Corona Friends Church fundraiser for the 100-Mile Club, an organization dedicated to youth fitness. Eaton’s motivational speech began with his journey as a young basketball player playing against NBA Legend Wilt Chamberlain.

Eaton elaborated how he was a discouraged player when he encountered Chamberlain at a pickup game in the men’s gymnasium on the UCLA campus in the early 1980s. Eaton had gone to UCLA on a scholarship but did not get much playing time. He was also downcast because he was not doing well in the UCLA pickup games that included NBA stars.

Eaton, who stands 7 feet 4 inches, said Chamberlain told him that he was not using his talent in the right way. Chamberlain, a 7-footer whom Eaton called arguably the greatest player of all time, told Eaton to concentrate on defense which was his strongest trait.

“When Wilt said that, everything changed,” said Eaton. “I understood what I needed to do.”

Eaton got a tryout with the Jazz. He made the team. He went on to be an NBA defensive player of the year. After retiring in 1993, the team hung a banner bearing Eaton’s No. 53 in the rafters of their Salt Lake City arena, meaning it had been retired. He told the Corona audience that having his number retired was the highest honor he received.
