Former NFL linebacker Gerald Irons spoke at Sam Houston State University for the spring President’s Speaker Series on March 18, where he discussed having a good focus on education, life, and careers. These particular life-skills that Irons brought attention to are some of the essential things that people need to have in order to achieve their goals at every stage of life. Many of the students who attended the event are the first in their families to go to a higher education,so it was important to the president to bring in speakers who show strong leadership skills. Irons was a great name to have recruited to the speaker list as he has accomplished a lot of very notable things throughout his lifetime.
Irons was born in Gary, Indiana and has a long line of family members playing professional sports including his sons and three of his nephews. He earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore before entering the NFL, and his Masters degree from the University of Chicago over a few off-season months during his sports career. The former linebacker spent five seasons a piece with the Oakland Raiders and the Cleveland Browns before retiring and leaving football to work as a president of the Conroe Independent School District Board of Trustees.
