Former NFL player and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin has been announced as the featured speaker at the August Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club’s Signature Breakfast happening on August 14 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the Weiner Theater at Hutchison School in Memphis, TN. Melvin will likely be telling the audience the story of how he became to have opportunities in both the NFL and as an astronaut, which is bound to be extremely appealing to everyone. In addition to the breakfast there will also be a reception that Melvin will be attending the previous day on the 13th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. in the same location.
The Virginia native is the only person in the world who has been drafted by the NFL and also been selected as an astronaut to go into outer space. Melvin attended the University of Richman from 1982-1985 where he participated on the school’s football team and was eventually picked up by the Detroit Lions during the 1986 NFL Draft but suffered an injury immediately after so the team released him. Afterwards he went to the training camp for the Dallas Cowboys but unfortunately endured yet another injury that basically ended his football career. By 1989 he was working at the Nondestructive Evaluation Sciences Branch at NASA Langley Research Center. He was chosen as an astronaut in 1998 and has spent a total of 23 days, 13 hours, and 28 minutes in space during his career.
Melvin will be attending this year’s Lipscomb Pitts Breakfast Club’s Signature Breakfast on August 14 as well as the reception on the evening of the 13th in Memphis. This will be a great opportunity for people to meet and hear from probably one of the most diverse individuals on Earth.
