Wade Davis SpeakerFormer NFL player, motivational speaker, writer, activist and educator Wade Davis came out publicly as gay in 2012, and says that his inspiration to do so came from a young man who came out at a young age.

Davis did not mention the young man by name, but he said that this particular young man’s courage to come out as gay at a young age despite what others may think or say about him was inspiring to him considering how much he personally felt he had to hide his sexuality throughout much of his life and during his NFL career.

When Davis played in the NFL from 2000-2003 and then two years in NFL Europe he felt he had to keep his identity in check for many reasons. Not only did he fear the ridicule from some of his teammates and the public, he also feared that it might affect the team in a negative way.

“You just want to be one of the guys, and you don’t want to lose that sense of family,” he said. “Your biggest fear is that you’ll lose that camaraderie and family.”

However, after his NFL career ended in 2005 he found a gay recreational sports league while living in New York City and his outlook about his identity changed. He went from not even wanting to utter the word “gay” to being open about who he is and it felt as though a weight had been lifted off his shoulders.

Davis currently works as the executive director of the You Can Play Project, which works for diversity and inclusion in sports. He is also now a staff member at the Hetrick-Martin Institute in New York, which serves gay, lesbian, bisexual an transgender youth.
