Ray Scapinello SpeakerFormer NHL official Ray Scapinello delighted the audience at the Haliburton Legion on January 31, giving the keynote address at the Morrison Charity Hockey Tournament banquet and telling stories from his 33 years of officiating one of the worst fastest and roughest sports. “Over my 33 year career, I officiated 2,508 games, which is a record, 426 playoff games, which is a record, and I was the oldest retiring at age 59, which is a record and I was certainly the shortest,” he said.

Former NHL referee and President of the Hockey Hall of Fame Scotty Morrison joked with his longtime friend and colleague as they reminisced for the audience. The tournament, named after Morrison, has raised $138,000 for Community Care over the last six years. Both Scapinello and Morrison are close to the organization and consider the Community Care mission very dear to their hearts.

Scapinello was an NHL linesman from 1971 to 2004, and never once missed a game due to injury or illness. Since retiring he has taken up a part-time job as an officials supervisor in two amateur hockey leagues, the Ontario Hockey League in Canada and the Central Hockey League in the United States. In 2008 Scapinello was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as an on-ice official.
