Martina HingisThis morning in New York City, it was announced that five-time Grand Slam champion and former World No. 1 tennis pro Martina Hingis was elected to the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Hingis became the World No. 1 at the age of 16, spending a total of 209 weeks at the top spot in 1997. In addition to her five Grand Slam victories she captured nine Grand Slam women’s doubles titles, a calendar year doubles Grand Slam and one Grand Slam mixed doubles title.

While the Switzerland native initially retired in 2003 at the age of 22 due to injuries she made a comeback in 2006 and won two titles that year, closing the season at No. 7. She won her final title in 2007, the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, before officially retiring.
