Retired mixed martial arts pioneer, former undefeated UFC champion and all-around stand up guy Frank “The Legend” Shamrock recently visited Tucson Medical Center’s children’s center as part of a trip through Southern Arizona. Shamrocks says “This year, I’ve decided to get more involved in charitable nonprofit work. I’ve been taking opportunities to go into communities and see what’s going on and try to give back a little bit. I’ve been in my own community just focusing on my daughter and I haven’t really been out and about much, but I would like to spend this whole year doing charity and nonprofit work.”
He was successful in his goal as he brightened the day of several patients (and parents) at the hospital with his genuine kind heartedness, words of encouragement and contagious smile. Whether through simple conversation or signing a few autographs for an excited young wrestler, Shamrock brought laughter, smiles and encouragement to TMC. The patients and their families aren’t the only ones who love the hospital visits; members of the TMC staff were thrilled to have Shamrock visit.
Shamrock was the first man to ever hold the UFC’s middleweight championship belt; a division later renamed the light heavyweight division. During his stay as champ, Shamrock successfully defended his belt four times and was ranked the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world during his reign. He held the belt through four defenses, from Dec. 21, 1997, until retiring from the UFC on Nov. 24, 1999. Shamrock returned to the sport later on to win multiple championships outside of the UFC, though he officially retired again in 2010. Since stepping away from the octagon, Shamrock has become a philanthropist, motivational speaker, social activist and author, along with several other impressive accomplishments. With his unwavering drive for success, Shamrock is a key model for anyone feeling down and out in a hospital bed.
When not working across the country to brighten days and teach technique, Shamrock said he is dedicating his time to rebuilding the Shamrock Ranch boys home, where both he and his adoptive brother and fellow MMA legend Ken were adopted as boys.
