Derek Jeter is one of those forever athletes. When he walks off the field for the last time at the end of this season he will not enter obscurity. He’ll be remembered with the great ones, the likes of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and in modern times, with guys like Michael Jordan.
During his 20 year career he was one of the most popular and visible athletes in the global market, with a laundry list of endorsements that would make any athlete jealous. One such endorsement that many of us associate with him the most is Gatorade, and they are celebrating their relationship with Jeter through a series of epic commercials at the end of the season.
In their latest Jeter campaign, Gatorade released a commercial titled “Made in New York”. Attempting to make the connection between the Yankee greats of old, Gatorade sets Jeter highlights to a black-and-white filtered back drop and a Frank Sinatra soundtrack. They also show what made Jeter so endearing to the fans over the years, which was that they felt he was just a normal guy, one of the them.
With the Yanks way out of the playoff picture, Jeter will be taking his final bow in a New York Yankees uniform in 10 days against of all teams, the Boston Red Sox. But it will likely give us a chance to see how legendary status stems beyond a rivalry, and we’ll no doubt see the respect shown by the Red Sox as one of the best players over the last two decades says his final goodbye.
