The Olympic Celebrations continue as Gold medalist Claressa Shields received a standing ovation Wednesday as she was honored by lawmakers at the Michigan Capitol for her impressive performance in the London Olympics. The Gold Medalist was greeted by state senators and guests in the Senate gallery Tuesday afternoon in Lansing, and a similar reception was planned in the House. Claressa Shields later shared:

“It looks like a castle, it’s big,” Shields said before exploring the Senate chamber. “I feel numb because of the cameras and stuff (that) comes with the territory.”

Claressa Shields road to success is quite incredible as she was introduced to boxing by her father, Bo Shields, who had boxed in underground leagues. Bo was in prison beginning when Shields was two years old, and released when she was nine. After his release, he talked to her about boxer Laila Ali, piquing her interest in the sport, although Bo nevertheless believed that boxing was a men’s sport and refused to allow Shields to pursue it until she was eleven. At that time, she began boxing at Berston Field House in Flint, where she met her coach and trainer, Jason Crutchfield. Shields credits her grandmother with encouraging her not to accept restrictions based on her gender.

Claressa Shields became the first woman and the only American boxer to win a gold medal at the London Olympic games.
