Tony LaRussa SpeakingThree-time World Series-winning manager Tony La Russa says young people must be willing to take chances as they begin their working lives. Great advice from from a Hall of of Fame whose MLB career spanned from 1963 to 2011. As a manager, La Russa guided his teams to three World Series titles, six league championships and twelve division titles in 33 seasons. He ranks third all-time in major league wins by a manager, behind Connie Mack and John McGraw.

La Russa delivered the commencement speech Friday to nearly 3,000 students graduate at Washington University in St. Louis.

La Russa’s address will give him practice for another one he will deliver this summer — when he’s inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. He managed the Oakland A’s to the 1989 championship and the St. Louis Cardinals to World Series wins in 2006 and 2011. He retired following the 2011 championship.

It was the 153rd commencement for Washington University. Five honorary degrees were handed out, including one to H&R Block co-founder Henry W. Bloch and another to David E. Robertson, music director of the St. Louis Symphony.
