Rod Carew Keynote FeeThe Seattle Mariners will host the 49th annual Hutch Award benefit luncheon at Safeco Field on January 30, 2014. The keynote speaker for the event will be Hall of Fame infielder Rod Carew, who played 19 seasons with the Minnesota Twins and California Angels from 1967 to 1985.

The event is held each year to honor the MLB player who best exemplifies the honor, courage, and dedication of Fred Hutchinson, a former All-Star pitcher and manager with the Tigers, Reds, and Cardinals, whose struggle with cancer led to the formation of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. This years recipient will be Mariners outfielder, Raul Ibanez.

Carew has had personal experience with cancer both through his own struggles and those of his daughter, who passed away from acute myeloid leukemia in 1996. He will be speaking about his struggles, and how the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has impacted the lives of so many with it’s unbelievable work. Over the last 14 years the event has helped raise $3.8 million to support cancer research at the Fred Hutch Center.
