Tony Dorsett SpeakerLast week former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Dorsett was featured as the keynote speaker for the New Mexico Bowl Kickoff Luncheon held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Albuquerque.

The Pro Football Hall of Famer spoke to both teams, including the NCAA’s two leading rushers: Arizona’s Ka’Deem Carey and Nevada’s Stefphon Jefferson.

Dorsett made it clear that he doesn’t like the fact that so many teams are splitting carries among multiple running backs, a trend that is especially true in the NFL but not at Nevada, where Jefferson is second in the nation in carries at 341- the team averages almost 30 carries per game.

He remarked, “Platooning maybe prolongs careers. I don’t know. But I’m a strong advocate for having one back. You have to get your hands on the ball. You have to get a better feel for how teams are reacting to certain formations or blocking schemes. You have a better chance of making a big play happen as the game goes on instead of coming in and out of the game. You just don’t get in the flow.”

Dorsett added, “When you see these wide receivers as fast as they are as big as they are and as athletic as they are, you’d be stupid not to get the ball to them. But to help make their job easier, and this is Football 101, you have to have a running game. As a running back, they have to get involved because you become a much better offense if you can establish that ground game.”
