Former Czech professional tennis player Ivan Lendl has been hosting a youth adaptive sports camp for children with disabilities in the Connecticut area for the past 25 years. It is a great time for both Lendl and the kids alike, as it gives them something to look forward to and also gets them outdoors doing something active.
The tennis legend especially enjoys it as he finds it rewarding and fun to work with the youth and offer them tips and advice from his career in sports. The week long camp is filled with different kinds of activities including basketball, track races, tennis, and is finished off with a dance for them to socialize and enjoy themselves before preparing to the next school year.
The eight-time Singles Grand Slam champion was born into a family of professional tennis players which helped him learn his passion and devotion to the sport. At one time he was named the number one player in the world and has played in tournaments in several different countries. Lendl moved to the United States in 1984 where he bought a home and settled in to life in Connecticut, but he officially became an American citizen in 1992. After his competitive playing years were over he went on to coach the popular British tennis star, Andy Murray, between the years of 2010 and 2012.
Lendl takes great pride in hosting his annual sports camp for children with disabilities every year in his home state of Connecticut, and hopes to be able to keep it around for at least another 25 years.
