Ernie Banks SpeakerLipscomb University has hit a home run by landing MLB Hall of Famer Ernie Banks as the keynote speaker for Don Mayer Evening of Excellence. Banks, affectionately known as Mr. Cub, will speak at the sixth annual fundraiser at Allen Arena on the campus of Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee on April 19.

“The Don Meyer Evening of Excellence has had great guests over the years and we are thrilled to add Ernie Banks’ name to the Lipscomb lineup card,” said Lipscomb athletic director Philip Hutcheson. “Ernie Banks is one of those ‘Mount Rushmore’ kind of figures when it comes to the world of baseball’s greatest ambassadors.”

Banks began his career in the Negro American League with the Kansas City Monarchs in 1950. After one season he was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and during that time he briefly played for the Harlem Globetrotters. When he returned to the Monarchs in 1953 he caught the attention of several major league teams due to his combination of power, speed, and defensive ability. In 1953 his contract was purchased by the Chicago Cubs, making him the first black player in franchise history.

Banks debuted for the Cubs at age 22 without ever having played a minor league game. The Texas native would go on to smash 512 home runs, win consecutive NL MVP Awards in 1958 and 1959, earn 11 NL All-Star selections, and win a Gold Glove Award in 1960.

Today, the 83-year old Banks is involved with a number of organizations and is working on starting a foundation to boost science, technology, engineering and math among the nation’s youth. “My life is now about raising money for different organizations centered around the humanities,” said Banks. “I support organizations that are helping people improve their lives. There are a lot of people doing wrong things at the wrong time with the wrong people. I want to help match them up with the right thing at the right time with the right people.”
