Boston Marathon bombing survivor Heather Abbott has been announced as the keynote speaker for the 11th annual WESPY Awards that are being held on March 28, 2016 at the Cabot Club in Windsor. Even though this event typically has an athlete as the speaker, Abbott was chosen as the keynoter based on her ability to overcome and show resilience the same way that all athletes do. She was with a group of friends in Boston, MA on April 15, 2013 when she was struck by shrapnel that came out of the second pressure cooker bomb while watching runners finish the marathon that day. At this year’s award ceremony there will be a new group of athletes will be recognized for their accomplishments over the past 12 months, and Abbott will be the perfect speaker for the occasion.
The Rhode Island native’s life has completely changed since enduring the suffering and pain from being a victim of those terrible bombings in April of 2013. Abbott had to make the difficult decision to amputate her leg from the knee down, and has since become a certified peer counselor for American Amputees. In addition to that, she has also created her own foundation to benefit others who have to live with the disability of a missing limb, and has made a big difference in her community. The Heather Abbott Foundation also specializes in providing people who needs prosthetics with a customized one for their needs.
Abbott will be speaking at the WESPY Awards in March of next year and will no doubt be an inspiration to the entire audience.
