Heisman Trophy winner George Rogers was the guest speaker on October 4th for the Greenwood Touchdown Club at the American Legion Post 20 in South Carolina. Tickets to get inside to hear the player costed $20 per person and started at 6:30 p.m., and ended up being a very fantastic time for everyone who attended. In addition to Rogers speaking, there will also be some time made to honor the local high school Players of the Week. Rogers was a very warm and friendly speaker and was able to talk about his life and career in a way that kept the mood light hearted and fun.
The Georgia native attended the University of South Carolina and played on the football team under coach Jim Carlen. Rogers had a great season during his senior year and led the nation in rushing yards with a total of 1,781 that ended up getting him the 1980 Heisman Trophy award. He entered the 1981 NFL Draft and was selected as the first overall pick by the New Orleans Saints with whom he played with for three years before going to play for the Washington Redskins for three years. By 1987, Rogers had to retire from playing the sport due to several sports injuries that would likely only get worse, but at least he was able to leave the league with a Super Bowl win under his belt.
Rogers spoke at the American Legion Post 20 in South Carolina earlier this month to talk about his life and sports career to all of the fans and families who attended. It was a extra special event given that the former player had been a football superstar for the University of South Carolina and in a way, it was a homecoming.
