He was known as an elite playmaker while playing for a total of 8 different teams during his career. His total of 1,079 assists was the fifth highest total in NHL history at the time of his 2004 retirement. He played in a total of five NHL All-Star Games and was a six-time finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct on the ice. In November, Oates will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame as part of its 2012 class which also included Pavel Bure, Joe Sakic and Mats Sundin.

The same day that he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame, June 26, 2012, Oates returned to Washington, where he was named the 16th head coach in franchise history, succeeding Dale Hunter.  His former teammates praised the move, calling him a “detail-oriented players’ coach” with excellent communication skills. Now he can teach young stars like Alex Ovechkin and Alexander Semin his lessons from the game.
