Former Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley was back in his hometown in Texas this July to showcase his upcoming football camp for kids in Diboll. Lots of people came out to the Buffalo Wild Wings location in Lufkin to meet and greet with the former NFL star, and to register for the camp that he is putting together. The football clinic itself is free of charge, however, kids who wish to participate in it were required to write an essay about what their goals in life are aside from sports. Finley wants to make sure that they know that a career as a professional athlete isn’t a end-all be-all, and that they need to prepare for the other opportunities that might come their way.
The Lufkin, Texas native was a football player during his high school years, and was so good that he was offered scholarships from several schools including Texas, Arizona, Houston, Texas Tech and Texas A&M, but decided to go with the University of Texas. Finley entered the 2008 NFL Draft where he was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round, and stayed with the team for five seasons until 2013. He unfortunately had a spinal cord injury in 2013, which ultimately forced him to end his career early.
Finley will be hosting a football camp near his old stomping grounds for local kids for free, and it’s going to be a fantastic experience for the youngsters. Not only do they get to learn from an athlete that’s been at the top, but they’ll also get reminded at the importance of education.
